Hardware sales in Australia have provided the likes of Mitre 10, Bunnings and independent hardware stores with a mini-boom with Australian households spending more than $2 billion a month on hardware items since March according to data compiled from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. 

For context, the monthly average spent on hardware over the last decade has been $1.3 billion nationally. Locally in Queensland, hardware and garden supplies sales have been running at $400 per month. 

The do-it-yourself industry is alive and well but also has application for many small business owners who have no choice but to innovate 

Critical thinking or problem solving becomes the first, second, third and ongoing challenge in any small business but the benefits that derive from do-it-yourself have the benefit of providing the small business operator with ways to be truly nimble and efficient.

While the obvious downfall of attempting to everything yourself is evident in terms of time, there are examples of small scale projects that have obvious health benefits.
